Naturopathy - "A distinct system of primary health care-an art, science, philosophy, and practice of diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of illness. Naturopathic medicine is distinguished by the principles upon which its practice is based. These principles are continually re-examined in the light of scientific advances. The techniques of naturopathic medicine include modern and traditional, scientific, and empirical methods" (AANP, 1998).

I have grown to be a kid who has always been sick all the time. I have been to the hospital yearly and I often get fever, diarrhea and the like as an adult. I have struggled with my health for a very, very long time and I have always wished to live a more healthy life. I have also been through ups and downs in my weight. Sometimes diets work and sometimes they don’t. Last year, Last 2014 I was diagnosed with diabetes and my big toe was almost amputated. I had suspected that this has been going on for years but since I have quit my formal job in the office to live and work freelance, I no longer have medical insurance so I was not aware. I have also had a throat surgery in 2013 prior to that. Basically I was a mess.

What is Naturopathic Healing?

Naturopathic healing is getting your body and your cells the natural way. I have grown up taking medicines and vitamins side by side herbs and tinctures. My mother was nicknamed Doctor Quack by my dad. She loved to learn about health and wanted us to grow to be healthy. And thus she listened to this Naturopathic doctor’s radio program a lot. As I listened to that guy, it did make a lot of sense. We as humans are organic and thus using organic substances to heal us and feed us is the way to go about life.

Naturopathic medicine is defined by the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) as:

“A distinct system of primary health care-an art, science, philosophy, and practice of diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of illness. Naturopathic medicine is distinguished by the principles upon which its practice is based. These principles are continually re-examined in the light of scientific advances. The techniques of naturopathic medicine include modern and traditional, scientific, and empirical methods” (AANP, 1998).

Well all that basically means is that we go back to nature but still use science and technology to heal our bodies as well as nourish it. Naturopathic medicine has gone a long way. From the time of the stone ages where people got certain herbs and leaves and crystals to heal themselves to scientists studying plants that can cure diseases even the deadly ones like cancer in high tech labs. Back in the day, people learned this techniques from their elders and it was passed down from father to son, mother to daughter and so forth. But now a days, in order to be a Naturopathic Doctor, you have to be certified and study for four years.

In the East people have never dismissed the power of Naturopathic Medicine unlike in the West. Many people there consult with Acupuncturists, Eastern Medicine Doctors and the like.

The Journey to Healing by Naturopathy

Post Surgery 2013. I was cleared and was allowed to go back to work. I can start talking but I was not supposed to strain my throat again. This was an issue because I worked in customer service and answered technical calls for a living. I was doomed. I was crying a lot because I knew I cannot find a job that would pay me as much. I had bills to pay, rent and my medical expenses. To top it off, there were times that I was at work and my throat would act up like crazy. One day I was really down, I decided to go on Facebook, then I saw an article about honey and it’s many benefits. I gave it a try. It was a LIFESAVER. I brought it to work with me. It had helped me greatly. It allowed me to go to work without my throat bugging me. Though in the end I did quit that job, honey is still magical for me.

I'm no expert when it comes to Naturopathy or even Medicine. I'm a writer/teacher who works at home and loves reading and yoga. I'm not a doctor. All I'm saying is that both you and me can benefit from taking Nature into our bodies. I eat okra more because it helps my kidneys and lowers my blood sugar. I drink tea to help my metabolism. I exercise three or four times a week, sometimes in the gym, sometimes at home. I try to look at my health through prevention better than cure.

Fast forward 2014, I had a toe wound that does not get better. It was looking really bad and funky. I went to the doctor to get the toenail extracted. Then I found out that I was diabetic. The doctors wanted me to go an expensive surgeon who was not available that day. I had no money and no medical insurance. I was doomed. I bought antibiotics as prescribed and Metformin too. But I wanted to be better. I knew there was something more. I found out that fish oil helps diabetics’ blood circulation to be better. I also accidentally found out that garlic oil helps lower my blood sugar levels. I had eaten rice but I took garlic oil after wards and then after that I took my glucose test and found that the blood coming out of my pricked finger was thinner (an indication of my sugar being lower) and so the results of the test also said so. Too many instances that natural stuff helped me. Oh by the way, I got the toenail out by myself but I would not really advise you doing the same thing. I was just so broke that time. Now I regularly go to a diabetologist every three months but she does agree that garlic oil has helped my diabetes a lot!

What really sealed the deal was one time my tooth really ached. I wanted to go to the dentist but it was late at night. I had taken three capsules of Ibuprofen and nothing happens. I cried and screamed in pain. Then I took garlic oil… and in a few minutes the pain subsided. It was really a big relief.

I still go to the doctor and taken Western Medicines though. But I have realized that Naturopathy can really heal and help us. My journey proved that we can make our bodies live healthier and happier by taking care of it and removing trash. I started to avoid preservatives and tried to eat natural food.

How it Can Help YOU?

YES, I AM A NATUROPATHY ADVOCATE. But I also believe in consulting your doctor and knowing your body by getting check-ups. What I’m saying is, we should not dismiss nature because many think it’s old fashioned. Nature is the FARMacy. It has i’s own bounties. I just hope large companies would invest in it to help people who cannot afford medical care or are suffering from really bad side effect. I still think that doctors are amazing and that they help people a lot. Last month I had a laser surgery for my eye because my intraoccular lenses were fogging up due to the skin in my eye turning white. So yeah doctors do help us. But I also think that YOU can benefit from taking a more natural way.

I can still remember my previous diabetologist (this was when I lived in a different area), he said “you can either rely on medicine, to cure you or you can change your diet and exercise more to minimize your blood sugar”. So I took his advise and now my HbA1C is at 5.5 which is really, really good!

My parting words? I hope you do your research. I hope you get off the couch and try a few steps around the block instead of watching TV. I hope you eat more fish and vegetables rather processed food. Know your body. This are the core principles of Naturopathy. In my case, I still need to lose about 40lbs or somewhere about 20kgs. I have recently lost 10lbs and I’m really optimistic about my weight going down. I hope to maintain my blood sugar levels. Last time I went to doctor, she reduced my Metformin intake from three a day to two and a half a day and removed Gliclazide. And this is all due to proper exercise and diet. If I can do it, so can you!
